Certificate Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Sport Coaching is intended to serve students across the university who have an interest in becoming part-time or full-time coaches and/or for those with an already existing interest in sport, who would like to add more in-depth knowledge of this critical area. The program aims to develop students’ knowledge of effective coaching methods and the principles that underpin them across the range of developmental coaching levels. Students in the program will learn how to utilize different methods to teach, improve and advance skill levels of their athletes through the creation of a system for long-term athletic success.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the skills and qualities associated with effective coaching.
  • Students will be able to construct an athlete/person-centered coaching philosophy that underpins their coaching methods and practice.
  • Students will be able to critique the theoretical principles that underpin different coaching methodologies and practices.
  • Students will be able to analyze how different coaching methods and the principles that underpin them affect the development of athletes across the range of learning domains.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge of current research around best practices associated with coaching methods and skill acquisition when coaching athletes/teams to develop a system for long-term athletic success.

Opportunities Upon Completion

Students will develop skills to enhance their abilities to coach sport(s) at the youth, club, interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional levels. Coaching opportunities and opportunities for sport leadership professionals in local youth centers such as YMCA, boys and girls clubs, continue to grow in the United States at all levels. For example, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (n.d.), there are 290,100 full-time coaches and scouts employed in the United States, with the number to rise 11% over the next decade. This excludes the numerous part-time and volunteer coaches in the country. Because of the significant role coaches play in sport, it is crucial they are educated in a variety of areas to maximize the positive experience and development of athletes no matter of the age and skill level of the athletes being coached. This is even more important at the youth level where sport continues to be a popular avenue for physical activity and where early experiences affect the continued engagement in sport throughout the life course.
