Program Overview

Ohio University’s Combined Master of Science and Dietetic Internship (MSDI) program is a four-semester (16 month) program. Interns complete clinical and foodservice management rotations in Columbus based hospitals. The MSDI program has a community health and wellness focus with a wide variety of community nutrition experiences available based on interns’ interests. The program accepts 10 interns a year, allowing for individualized experiences and mentorship of all students.

Interns will spend their first two semesters completing graduate classes at the Dublin Integrated Education Center and completing rotations in Central Ohio. The last two semesters, interns will continue graduate courses at Ohio University’s main campus in Athens, Ohio. Second-year internship experiences are located in Southeastern Ohio. In addition to graduate coursework and internship experiences, interns will complete a graduate project in an area of interest prior to graduation.

Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree and are eligible to sit for the national Registered Dietitian Examiniation.  

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective and professional oral presentation skills
  • Demonstrate effective and professional written presentation skills.
  • Apply knowledge of technologies to research interpretation
  • Demonstrate proficiency in either food and nutrition research or an applied project.
  • Appraise food and nutrition issues from diverse perspectives.

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Verification statement, confirming completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) coursework from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.7
  • Apply by submitting the application packet using the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services system
  • Apply to the Ohio University Graduate School after being matched to Ohio University by D&D Digital and accepting your match

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

This program requires completion of the the following:

  • A minimum of 1,200 supervised practice hours, with a minimum of 550 community hours, 400 clinical hours and 250 food service management hours.
  • Successful completion and documentation of all Learning Objectives in the Learning Assessment Summary Matrix
  • Master of Science Degree requirements, which are outlined below and include a minimum of 22 credits supervised practice and 34 didactic course credits.
