Program Overview

The master’s degree program in Educational Leadership involves a minimum of 31 semester hours encompassing the study of the foundations of educational leadership, the nature of school organizations, human relations in educational organizations, and research methods and applications. Additional coursework, specialized study and field experiences are included to prepare the students for varied administrative roles.

Through a balanced approach of on-line and in-class instruction, all campus models include a blended course format with a weekend cohort (to accommodate working professionals) with the option of taking traditional on-campus courses. Additionally, the program offers face to face and online courses in a condensed format of 5 – 8 weeks during the summer. The program offers course work and internships required for obtaining a master’s degree in educational leadership.  Students may choose to complete this program and earn only the master’s degree or they can pursue both the degree and principals license certificate through the Educational Leadership with Principal Licensure - ME . Students who wish to pursue only the principal license can do through the Principal Leadership and Licensure Certificate . Students completing only the master’s degree typically complete the program  four semesters.

Emphasizing the knowledge, skills, and practices of responsive leadership, the Educational Leadership Program fosters a vision of humane, engaging, inviting schools and educational settings; including:

  • Understanding of leadership theory and models of practice
  • Understanding of organizational behavior and management principles
  • Commitment to social justice and democratic principles to promote academic excellence, equity and a more knowledgeable citizenry
  • Hands-on experience in an appropriate internship setting
  • Understanding of effective change theory and adult learning principles
  • Commitment to, and practice in, research and evidence-based practice and application

Opportunities for Graduates  

The program is committed to preparing students to be agents of change in education and related fields such as government agencies, foundations, and private non-profit organizations. Program graduates typically assume positions as leaders of learning organizations, school principals, school superintendents, and otherPK-12 educational leaders, or they may continue to serve as teachers in P-12 settings.  In addition, graduates who work in the public or private sector fill other leadership and/or administrative roles in those organizations. Other graduates enter doctoral programs in leadership and related fields.

Admission Requirements

  1. Completed application form 
  2. A current résumé/CV and cover letter 
  3. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended for bachelor’s and master’s education 
  4. Three letters of recommendation that describe the academic skills and professional potential of the applicant 
  5. An autobiographic essay (2-4 pages, double-spaced) will be used to assess the applicant’s writing skills, career commitment, leadership potential, and professional goals.  
  6. For international applicants who are non-native speakers of English, a minimum TOEFL or IELTS is expected, as indicated on the website of the Graduate College https://www.ohio.edu/graduate/apply/international-students/english-proficiency 
  7. A personal interview with a faculty member (phone/virtual meeting) may be required. 
  8. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is NOT required.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
