Program Overview

Students interested in the classical world can minor in classical civilization, and take courses in a wide range of subjects. While language courses at the 2000-level and above can count toward the minor, you do not have to study Latin or Greek to complete the minor. Students majoring in history, English, fine arts and anthropology have taken the minor.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

While the minor in classical civilization does not prepare you for a specific career or graduate program, your studies in classics will help prospective employers or admissions committees take note of your Ohio University degree. The classics minor will give you some focused instruction and practice in the reading and analysis of important classical texts that raise fundamental questions about our culture and society.

Minor Hours Requirement


The classical civilization minor requires a minimum of 15 credit hours.

Foundations: Greece and Rome


Class I Electives


Complete one course from the following list of courses or any other CARS 2000-level course. Courses used to complete Greece or Rome Foundations requirements cannot also be used to meet the Class I Elective requirement.

Class II Electives


Complete one course from the following list of courses, any other CARS 3000-level or 4000-level course, or any class from the list of approved affiliate courses. Courses used to complete Greece or Rome Foundations cannot also be used to meet the Class II Elective requirement.

Capstone in Classics and Religious Studies


Complete the following course or any other 4000-level CARS course designated as a capstone. Students can also meet this requirement by completing 3 credit hours of CARS 4900  or CARS 4930 .
