Program Overview

The dance history and theory minor is for non-dance majors who are interested in dance as a form of culture, art, and history. Coursework emphasizes historical, cultural, and aesthetic studies of dance globally and through time. This minor complements study in fields such as literature, history, journalism, communication, playwriting, museum studies, and global studies.

Freshman/First-Year Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements. No audition is required.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

This concentrated study helps prepare students with a specialized dance emphasis for employment or graduate study in dance studies, arts administration, dance ethnology, journalism or criticism, and dance in film or video.

Minor Hours Requirement


The dance: history and theory minor requires a minimum of 18 hours.

Studio Dance Technique


Complete at least 3 credit hours in studio dance technique courses. Prerequisite courses must be met and are not part of the minor. Select from the following courses:

Complete 3 hours of elective courses in Dance (DANC ****). Courses listed above, which are not already being used to satisfy a requirement can count as electives.
