Certificate Overview
The multi-disciplinary graduate certificate in gerontology addresses the educational needs of graduate students and professionals in a variety of disciplines who work with the aging or elderly population. The certificate allows students in any graduate program within the university to gain knowledge and skills related to working with older adults. The certificate is also available to those who already possess an undergraduate or advanced degree and it is appropriate for students planning to continue doctoral preparation in gerontology or related areas. The typical or expected time to completion is two semesters.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of diverse life course components that shape older adulthood to respective fields of study.
- Describe how age-related mechanisms influence aspects of health and wellbeing (e.g., physical, mental, emotional, social, and economic) in old age.

This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program alone.
Completion Requirements
Complete a total of 9 credit hours from courses in three categories.
