Program Overview

Programs in the field of Higher Education and Student Affairs focus on administration and teaching at the collegiate level. In administration, the higher education program focuses on preparing individuals for leadership positions in various functional areas within higher education and student affairs. Required coursework examines the background of higher education and student affairs, the study of internal organizational standards, policy perspectives, and the principles of finance and governance. In college teaching, the program assists students in examining pedagogy and curriculum development on the collegiate level. Coursework provides an opportunity to examine the theory and practice of college teaching, the professoriate, academic management, professional development, and the nature of students and the collegiate environment.

The Higher Education and Student Affairs doctoral programs are offered both as a weekend, Executive Ph.D. program for working professionals, and traditional on-campus program. The Executive program requires three years of coursework, followed by a comprehensive examination and dissertation. The traditional Athens campus program can be enrolled either part-time or full-time. Full-time students normally complete coursework in two years.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of the program, students will be able to:  

• comprehend relevant historical, organizational, governance, financial, diversity, policy, student development theories, and other contemporary issues concerning higher education;   

• critically analyze and evaluate relevant higher education policy and conceptual and theoretical literature;   

• apply the necessary knowledge, theories, and methods to design and conduct original research; and  

• integrate theory and practice through the completion of a practicum experience.

Admission Requirements

Portfolio Admission Review and Faculty interview. Priority consideration is given to applications completed by February 1.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Complete 61 credit hours above the master’s degree, with no grades below a B-.
