Program Overview

The M.A. program in History provides advanced training in historical research and writing. Students specialize in a major and a minor field of historical study. Each field is drawn from within one of three broadly defined geographical areas of concentration (listed below).  Fields are defined by either national, regional, or thematic focus.

  • Advanced understanding of a concentrated body of historical knowledge and historiography
  • Advanced understanding of historical research techniques
  • Development of advanced writing skills (in preparation for doctoral study or professional writing)

The M. A. program prepares students for doctoral study in History, research positions in government or private organizations, and a variety of other careers.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited university
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Transcripts
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may be submitted but is not required. The code for Ohio University is 1593.
  • Writing sample
  • TOEFL of 110+ (for non-native English speakers)

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

All courses must be at the 5000-level or higher and approved to fulfill the relevant requirements by the Director of Graduate Studies. Complete a minimum of 32 credit hours as follows:

Thesis-Track Major and Minor Fields


All thesis-track History M.A. students must complete a minimum of three courses in one field (major) and two courses in a second field (minor).

For both major and minor requirements, students may choose from the following fields, with national or regional focus: United States, Modern Europe, Early Modern Europe, Ancient and Medieval Europe, Middle East, Latin America, Africa, or Southeast Asia or they may choose the following fields with thematic focus: colonialism and post-colonialism, cultural and intellectual history, environmental history, history of political economy, international relations, military and strategic history, politics and policy history, religious history, or women’s and gender history. 

Non-Thesis-Track Major and Minor Fields


All non-thesis-track  History M.A. students must complete a minimum of three courses in one field (major) and three courses in a second field (minor).

In addition to the above fields listed for thesis-track students, non-thesis track students may complete an Applied History Field (MA4219) as one of their field options which requires the following:

Methods Courses


All History M.A. students must complete at least one research seminar and at least one course in historiography.

Culminating Experience


Thesis track: a minimum of 4 thesis hours plus successful completion and oral defense of a thesis.

Non-thesis track: successful completion of written comprehensive exams or a portfolio for those in the Applied History Field.
