Program Overview

The mission of the Online MBA is to provide working professionals with specialized skills to advance their careers.

The Online MBA is designed to help working professionals build a valued career in the business world through the development of the essentials of critical thinking and practical business knowledge that defines successful leaders.

The Online MBA program is structured to help students enhance core business competencies and develop the confidence to thrive as strategic and resourceful professionals. The program promotes career-changing and professional and personal development by providing advanced knowledge and tools to excel in the business world.

Specialized concentrations provide an academically robust, accessible, and focused program to help students achieve their career goals.

Concentrations

The Online MBA offers nine concentrations.

Online MBA with a concentration in Health Care (MB6152)

Hone the skills needed to lead any healthcare organization. You will learn to effectively lead people while building a strong team culture and improving organizations’ patient-centered care practices. Topics in this specialization include examining the leader’s role in developing and executing quality, safety and service; leaders’ responsibilities in applying the financial processes unique to healthcare delivery systems; and the skills required to build and manage successful teams.    

Online MBA with a concentration in Finance (MB6153)

Examine the risks and rewards for investing in volatile markets and gain a deeper understanding of portfolio management and corporate finance. Focus on the study of financial protocol, including capital; the structure of financial institutions; dividend policies; long- and short-term financing; and risk management at the firm level.

Online MBA with a concentration in Executive Management (MB6155)

Learn to collect, interpret, and utilize the analytics and data that drive successful business. Develop the capacity for critical thinking and confident decision-making. Focus on the theories, challenges and practices associated with implementing organizational change. Examine ethical business in the global environment.

Online MBA with a concentration in Accounting (MB6154)

Deepen your understanding of today’s financial opportunities and challenges with a broader overview of the conceptual framework of accounting, as well as the advanced accounting knowledge that can help you move into managerial and C-suite roles. Focus on capital budgeting, finance, taxation and accounting information systems, forensic accounting, and government/ not-for-profit accounting.

Online MBA with a concentration in Business Analytics (MB6157)

Gain specialized training in the use of advanced analytical techniques for managerial decision-making. Focus will be placed on managing, processing, and analyzing data in order to address a multitude of business challenges and opportunities. Draws upon a portfolio of methods that include data mining, optimization, and database management so that data can be transformed into information and insights in order for organizations to meet their strategic goals.

Online MBA with a concentration in Business Venturing (MB6166)

The Business Venturing concentration addresses a critical need for professionals to develop the competences that enable venturing in an established organization or startup. Students will develop innovative competences, and mindset for self or organization. Students will also develop the competences in individuals (transferable to organizations) that can help map, build and grow entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Online MBA with a concentration in Strategic Selling and Sales (MB6167)

Strategic Selling and Sales curriculum content will include topics such as sales force management, strategic account management, leading sales teams, sales analytics, selling methodologies, and account analysis and selection.

Online MBA with a concentration in Operations and Supply Chain Management (MB6168)

The Operations and Supply Chain Management concentration provides students with a global perspective. Students will understand the complexity and interdependence of functions within an organization as well as organizations within a supply network. Students will gain an understanding of continuous improvement for increasing quality levels, decreasing costs, and reducing risks within an organization. A student that completes this certificate will be a more effective manager, a systems-thinker, and a problem solver.

Online MBA with a concentration in Project Management (MB6186)

The Project Management concentration focuses on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®), as identified by the Project Management Institute (PMI). This concentration serves as a graduate-level option for working professionals to pursue a graduate educational experience and can augment other graduate experiences at Ohio University.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of business knowledge across business disciplines.
  • Use analytical thinking skills to solve business problems.
  • Exhibit leadership skills relevant to the business profession.
  • Demonstrate effective communications skills.

Admission Requirements

  • Regionally-accredited bachelor’s degree.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic references. At least one letter from a supervisor is strongly recommended.
  • Official transcripts from all degree bearing institutions at the bachelor’s level or higher and unofficial transcript for any additional college coursework.
  • A professional plan statement discussing your career goals, how the master’s degree will help you achieve those goals, areas or competencies that you expect the program will help you strengthen and what you plan to contribute to the learning community.
  • Current resume.
  • TOEFL or IELTS for non-native English speakers. 

College of Business Graduate Academic Credit Transfer Policy

Students may request transfer of credit from an accredited university within the limits of the Ohio University Graduate Catalog. Graduate credits from AACSB accredited business school or college may be applied toward a College of Business graduate program under the following conditions:

  1. A maximum of six credit hours toward a graduate degree program may be applied.
  2. A maximum of three credit hours toward a graduate certificate may be applied.
  3. Approval of transfer credit is granted by the Department Chair of the academic discipline in which credit is being requested. Course credit must be:
  4. Earned through an AACSB-accredited business school,
  5. Designated as graduate credit at the institution where taken,
  6. Letter graded B or better,
  7. Earned within the pasts five years,
  8. Applicable toward a graduate degree at the institution where taken, and
  9. Earned in courses taught by members of that institution’s graduate faculty.

Students must provide the following information to the Graduate College during the admissions process for graduate course credits to be evaluated for transfer credit:

  1. Official Transcript
  2. Syllabus from course(s) to be evaluated for transfer credit, from the term the course was completed
  3. COB Graduate Transfer Credit Form

International Students

This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

The Online MBA is a lock-step program over the course of six semesters. A total of 35 credit hours are required for graduation.

Culminating Experience


Capstone Simulation – Students will apply their learning from the MBA program in a simulated business experience. Students manage companies with respect to accounting, finance, operations, marketing, and HR through making annual decisions for companies operating for multiple simulated years. Financial statements, information regarding employee productivity, consumer perceptions, and changing market conditions are used to inform decisions. Students will also work towards understanding how strategy is integrated within their own firms through interviews with key employees and discussions with their instructors.
