Program Overview

The Superintendent Leadership and Licensure Certificate is a post-master’s program designed for administrators (typically principals or administrative specialists) seeking to be superintendents or district-level leaders. The program is a cohort model delivered in an online format approximately one Saturday per month for one academic year with one in-person meeting per semester. The program requires 16 credits. Each semester, students take two core content courses (3 credits each) and one internship course (2 credits). Courses and internships focus on planning for district improvement; school district operations and management; education policy, advocacy, and district governance; and community and public relations.

Candidates who successfully complete the superintendent preparation program understand and demonstrate the capacity to promote the current and future success and well-being of each student and adult by applying the knowledge, skills, and commitments to lead:

Opportunities for Graduates

The program prepares educators to fill district leadership positions such as Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Curriculum Directors and other central office positions. Up to 16 hours from this licensure program may be applied toward graduation requirements for the Educational Leadership  doctorate.

Admission Requirements

  • Online application (CTSLLG)
  • Transcripts conferring a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education or education-related field from an accredited university with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 scale (not required if degree is from Ohio University)
  • Active professional administrative license (or the ability to obtain one before the program begins)
  • Statement of purpose regarding career commitment, leadership potential, and professional goals
  • Current résumé/CV is preferred but not required

International Students

This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
