Program Overview

The M.M. in performance is designed for professionally oriented performers and studio and school music teachers who wish to pursue this curriculum as a terminal degree. It is also for those who wish to use it as a foundation for doctoral study. The goal is to prepare graduate students, both technically and intellectually, for professional careers as performers or conductors. Acceptance into the Master of Music in performance is by audition only.  

Program Learning Outcomes

In successfully pursuing an Ohio University Master of Music degree, students will

  1. Develop advanced capacities to work independently and make effective artistic and intellectual judgments and professional decisions in the area of specialization.
  2. Demonstrate professional competence in the area of specialization before peers and faculty.
  3. Produce a final project or equivalent reviewed by more than one faculty member.

Opportunities for Graduates

The Master of Music degree in Performance is designed to prepare graduate students, both technically and intellectually, for professional careers as performers or as artist-teachers; for studio and school music teachers who wish to pursue this curriculum as a terminal degree; and for those who wish to use the degree as a foundation for doctoral study.

Admission Requirements

Acceptance into the Master of Music in Performance program is by audition only for all entering students.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

The M.M. in Performance degree requires a minimum of 38 to 47 credit hours, depending on the track. Complete the requirements for one of the seven tracks as follows:

Requirements for All M.M. Performance Students


Students in all tracks must complete these requirements in addition to those specific to their own track as described below.

Coursework


Complete the following coursework for a minimum of 20 hours:

Culminating Experience


All students must perform a graduate recital. Area faculty must hear and approve the recital at least two weeks prior to the final performance.

Brass Performance Requirements


In addition to the requirements for all students, complete the following as approved by area faculty for a minimum of 46 total credit hours:

Percussion Performance Requirements


In addition to the requirements for all students, complete the following as approved by area faculty for a minimum of 44 total credit hours:

Piano Performance Requirements


In addition to the requirements for all students, complete the following as approved by area faculty for a minimum of 40 total credit hours:

Organ Performance


In addition to the requirements for all students, complete the following as approved by area faculty for a minimum of 38 total credit hours:

String Performance Requirements


In addition to the requirements for all students, complete the following as approved by area faculty for a minimum of 43 total credit hours:
