Certificate Overview
The goal of the Project Management Certificate is to build dedicated leaders and skilled project managers who are exceptionally well suited for all positions in which they will lead people and projects.
The Project Management Certificate is a comprehensive study of specific management and leadership skills aligned to industry standards such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Classes focus on combining project management processes and universally applicable topics such as change and risk management. Students who graduate will be prepared to lead with knowledge and confidence while also enhancing their academic credentials. Students will interact with and learn from a faculty of project management leaders with industry experience while gaining project management insights and expertise. Students will be able to apply what they learn to add value to their current or future employment. Graduates will be able to apply both advanced leadership techniques and proven technical skills in cross-disciplinary teams to execute projects and programs that deliver consistently valuable results.
Students can complete the certificate in three 7-week terms, with 21 weeks of online coursework.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
- Project Management Technical Skills –Students will be able to synthesize the appropriate responses and documentation using modern project management tools and techniques to manage project stakeholders, budgets, timelines, quality, and other project-specific requirements.
- Professional Behavior – Students will be able to select and apply appropriate management and communication strategies to mitigate team conflict, build high-performing teams, and negotiate with suppliers and stakeholders for the benefit of the project.
- Strategic Awareness – Students will synthesize the appropriate project management tools and techniques within the context of the strategic objectives of the company concerning ethics, program, and portfolio objectives.
Opportunities upon Completion
Project management opportunities exist in many enterprises. The graduate-level Project Management Certificate provides a deep foundation for the individual, working as a project manager, who aspires to become a certified CAPM or PMP through the Project Management Institute.
Admission Requirements
Applicants whose qualifications satisfy all elements of the following criteria are reviewed for admission to the Certificate in Project Management program. Please note that transfer credits are not accepted for this program. For current undergraduate students, Ohio University offers the on-campus undergraduate project management certificate (https://www.ohio.edu/engineering/academics/certificates/project-management) and the online undergraduate certificate (https://www.ohio.edu/engineering/academics/certificates/tech-project-management).
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program
- GPA 2.75 or higher
- Students may be required to take and pass a preparatory bridge class before acceptance to the if so assigned by the program administrator
- Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic references; at least one letter from a supervisor is strongly recommended
- Official transcripts from all degree-bearing institutions at the bachelor’s level or higher, and unofficial transcript for any additional college coursework
- A professional plan statement discussing your career goals, how the certificate will help you achieve those goals, areas or competencies that you expect the program will help you strengthen, and what you plan to contribute to the learning community
- Current resume
- TOEFL or IELTS for non-native English speakers must meet university requirements
International Students
This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
Completion Requirements
- Complete nine credit hours in three courses, with no grade below a “C.”
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all graduate course work at Ohio University.
There is no thesis or qualifying exam.
This program follows all Ohio University graduate level policies and procedures.
