Program Overview

This program serves students seeking to express creative ideas in a professional manner with analytical rigor. The degree consists of studio and/or scholarly projects and experiences, oral presentations, and papers. It is a one to two-year program.

Students who qualify will be awarded this M.A. and may apply to continue their studies in the Ph.D. program. Undergraduate students will be able to consider this degree as a 3 + 1 option.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to combine three different areas of emphasis within the College of Fine Arts.
Students will be able to synthesize studio practice with scholarly research.
Students will be able to produce an original interdisiplinary culminating project at a professional level.

Admission Requirements

Potential candidates must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. or international university. The following materials must be submitted:

Official transcripts of previous degree
Three current letters of recommendation that address the candidate’s academic achievement and potential
A two page statement of purpose in which the applicant discusses reasons for applying and the intended three areas of concentration
Admission application form from the OU Graduate College
A sample research paper or creative practice from the applicant’s previous work

For creative practice, the student should contact at least one appropriate College of Fine Arts instructor (outside of IARTS), indicating interest in the degree. The student’s portfolio or creative work will be reviewed by this instructor. A letter from the instructor indicating support for the student’s project, as well as the portfolio, should be included in the application (along with the other required materials). A personal interview is recommended.

International Students

International students must submit evidence of proficiency in the English language to be offered a teaching stipend, and must achieve at least the minimum score on the TOEFL/IELTS required by the Graduate College. Students with scores lower than the minimum may be considered for admission, but will be retested upon arrival at Ohio University and may be required to take additional intensive English courses.

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Complete a minimum of 33 credit hours as follows:

Areas of Concentration

Complete a minimum of 27 credit hours spread over three areas of concentrations from the College of Fine Arts. Each area of concentration should include a minimum of 9 hours of coursework.

On a case-by-case basis, courses outside the College of Fine Arts will be considered. The program director will meet with prospective students and must approve the choice of concentration areas and courses.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students must demonstrate or acquire reading proficiency in a language other than spoken English.

Culminating Experience

Students are required to complete a written thesis, studio thesis, or culminating experience. Students must enroll in a minimum 6 thesis or culminating experience credit hours.

The thesis or culminating experience must be approved by the student’s thesis advisor and all other thesis committee members. This proposal must also be approved by the Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts.
