Program Overview

Our mission is to educate electrical engineering professionals to become leaders in industry, government, and university positions, who are committed to the highest standards of professional ethics, lifelong learning, and improving the human condition.

This program leads to a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Research in the areas of avionics and navigation, communications and signal processing, controls, computer engineering, autonomous vehicles, electromagnetics, opto- and nano-electronics, industrial controls, and analog and digital circuits.

The Athens campus program is a full-time program, and offers thesis and non-project options. Normative time to completion is 2 years.

An  online M.S. in Electrical Engineering  (MS7272) is also available.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will achieve mastery of graduate level concepts in Electrical Engineering, including depth in a chosen concentration, and breadth across the discipline.
  • Students will demonstrate mastery of graduate level technical writing and communication.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to apply skills and knowledge in a professional setting.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to build significant Electrical Engineering projects, using computational tools appropriate to the discipline.

Opportunities for Graduates

Students with a master’s degree in EE are generally given more responsibility than those with bachelor’s degrees in industrial and government laboratory settings. Master’s degree holders may supervise teams and manage projects, and may also work in research and development, along with or supervised by Ph.D. engineers. The master’s degree is also good preparation for those candidates interested in obtaining doctoral degrees.

Admission Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field is required. Students with degrees from programs that are not accredited by the ABET engineering or computing commissions must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. For applicants whose native language is not English, scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are also required. Three letters of recommendations from persons familiar with the applicant’s academic abilities are required. Admission and support (tuition scholarships, research and teaching assistantships) are competitive. Letters of recommendation, undergraduate transcripts, grade point average (GPA), GRE and TOEFL scores are all considered when determining admission and financial support.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

The Athens-based M.S. in Electrical Engineering requires a minimum of 33 credit hours for the M.S. Thesis track and 36 credit hours for M.S. Non-Thesis track, and completion of an approved program of study, which will minimally include the courses listed below.

Grade Standards for Graduation

No more than six (6) semester hours of grades at B-, C+, or C may be applied toward fulfilling degree requirements, (i.e., for all coursework used to fulfill the course requirements on the Program of Study). In addition, no hours below a grade of C may be applied toward fulfilling degree requirements. Nine (9) or more semesters below B- will result in the removal of the student from the M.S. program.  

Thesis Option (MS7253) Requirements


Students fulfilling degree requirements by completing a written thesis must complete:

  • (minimum 2 hours)
  • Students must complete a minimum of 24 hours of graduate-level coursework as approved by their committee that meets the following:

    • At least 6 of those hours must be at the 6000-level or higher
    • At least 6 of the hours at the 6000-level or higher must be EE courses
    • 18 credits of 5000 or higher number from the list of courses fulfilling breadth requirements including at least two courses that fall outside the student’s concentration area

Culminating Experience


Students must successfully complete and defend a thesis.

Non-Thesis Option (MS7239) Requirements


Students fulfilling degree requirements by completing a non-thesis project must complete a minimum of 33 hours of graduate-level coursework as approved by their committee.

  • At least 12 of those hours must be at the 6000-level or higher
  • At least 9 of the hours at the 6000-level or higher must be EE courses.
  • At least 24 credits must be at the 5000 level or higher from the list of courses fulfilling the breadth requirements including at least two coures falling outside the student’s concentration area.
