Certificate Overview
The Music Theory Pedagogy Certificate affords graduate music students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience in teaching music theory and aural skills beyond what the Music Theory Pedagogy course can offer. Students will take three courses as part of the certificate: the Music Theory Pedagogy course, a course in supervised teaching, and a capstone course. In Supervised Teaching, students will observe a variety of theory and aural skills classes at OU and then develop lesson plans for three different music theory/aural skills courses, to be implemented by guest teaching those classes. The capstone will focus on synthesizing current trends in music theory pedagogy with knowledge and experience gained from students’ observations and supervised teaching. This certificate can be completed in two semesters, although it is more common for it to be completed in three.
Certificate Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, students will be able to:

- Create well-formed lesson plans, assignments, and assessments.
- Implement lesson plans in real-world teaching situations.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of particular teaching approaches and activities.
- Synthesize research and teaching experience in prose.
