Program Overview

The M.S. in Translational Biomedical Sciences (TBS) is available to students without a Translational Biomedical master’s degree who have been accepted into and enrolled in the TBS Ph.D.  This is a full-time program.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to act according to professional standards of scientific inquiry and responsible conduct that are essential for the pursuit of new knowledge.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of basics concepts in translational biomedical sciences and sufficient individualized knowledge to make a meaningful and impactful scientific contribution. 
  • Students will be able to design and complete master’s-level research study and/or scientific experiments.  
  • Students will be able to process and analyze data to make sound interpretations. 
  • Students will be able to communicate scientific ideas in both written and oral forms to diverse audiences.

Admission Requirements

Students must be enrolled in the TBS Ph.D.  program.

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Graduation Requirements

Credit may be transferred to this program according to the Transfer Credit Policy . OR

This program does not accept transfer of credits from other institutions. OR

This program accepts transfer credit [insert program guidelines here].

The TBS master’s degree requires a minimum of 30 credits in graduate work beyond the bachelor’s degree and the completion of an approved Individual Development Plan (IDP), which will minimally include the following requirements:

Students must complete a minimum of 18 hours of courses, including each of the following categories.

Research Hours


As early as the first semester of graduate study, a student in the TBS program must begin to engage in research under the supervision of a TBS graduate faculty, and register for credit hours of TBS 6940.

Required Milestones


The path to complete the program will contain a series of defined milestones, which will be governed by the program rules as approved by the steering committee, and organized as follows:

Milestone 1: Demonstration of acquisition of the core competencies for translational biomedical sciences.

Milestone 2: Demonstration of the ability to conduct independent research and to communicate effectively the results of that work.

Culminating Experience


The culminating experience is normally a qualifying master’s exam. If approved by the steering committee, one of the following alternate demonstrations of research ability may be substituted for the exam:

  • Significant participation in the design, data gathering, and writing of a  peer-reviewed manuscript that has been accepted for publication.
  • Major contributions to a well-known, refereed conference plus a publicly-announced talk in the TBS Career Development Center.
