Certificate Overview

The scientific study of language is spread across multiple disciplines and is growing rapidly. The OHIO graduate certificate in the experimental study of language is for graduate students who wish to broaden their education in the study of language and gain research knowledge and experience. It is anticipated that this certificate will be attractive to students in Spanish, Linguistics, Latin American Studies, International Studies, Psychology, and Communication Sciences and Disorders. The curriculum is extends across units participating in the Institute for the Experimental Study of Language (IESL). Note: the research project for this certificate will not count toward a requirement in the student’s home degree program.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

identify an interdisciplinary research question in the study of language.
integrate various perspectives in the study of language.
effectively present research findings.

Opportunities upon Completion

Students who complete this certificate will be well-positioned to continue academic studies at the Ph.D. level in a variety of areas including communication sciences and disorders, linguistics, Spanish, and other areas.

Admission Requirements

Students will compose a statement of intent, two to three pages, that outlines reasons for wanting to be admitted to the certificate program. This statement of intent must be accompanied by a letter, addressed to the IESL Associate Director for Training, asking for consideration for admission. Upon application, potential students will have already identified a research mentor (for the research project). Grade point average requirement = 3.2.

International Students

An I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate. However, this certificate can be completed as part of an Ohio University graduate degree in a related field, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to that degree program.

Completion Requirements

Complete 14 credit hours as follows:

Research Methods Course

Complete one graduate (5000-level or higher) research course for a minimum of 3 credit hours from the following list:

HSLS 6010 - Research Methods in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences
EDRE 5010 - Introduction to Educational Research Methods
EDRE 7200 - Educational Statistics
PSY 6120 - Advanced Research Methods in Psychology
Other appropriate research methods course as approved by the Associate Director of Training in consultation with two other members of the IESL

Language/Language Development Courses

Complete two courses from the following list for a minimum of 7 credit hours. Only courses outside your home degree program may count toward this requirement.

Research Project

Students will complete a minimum of four (4) credit hours in the conduct of research. The student will work closely with a faculty member (IESL Institute member) on a small research project that is aligned with the mission of the IESL. The research must be related to the faculty member’s research. The research project is an empirical research project designed to give the student experience and skills in conducting research on language. For the research project, students will register for their respective independent study or research course within their academic unit (e.g., X930, X940). A student will spend two semesters on the research project. With the mentorship of the supervising faculty member, the student will:

Identify a research area/question
Research the background literature and formulate hypotheses Determine the methodology
Collect and analyze data (note: the data may already exist)
Report and discuss findings
Provide future research directions.

Culminating Experience

Students will produce an acceptable manuscript that includes the following sections: Introduction, Literature Review, Research Questions/Hypotheses, Methodology, Results, Discussion. (Note: This will not go through the TAD system). Each student will deliver a formal presentation of his or her research study at a meeting of the Institute for the Empirical Study of Language.
