Program Overview

Through a balanced online and in-class instructional approach, the Master’s in Educational Leadership is a 30-credit program completed over three semesters. The program prepares students to be leaders in education and related fields such as P-12 school districts, government agencies, foundations, and non-profit organizations. Other graduates enter doctoral programs in leadership and related fields. The courses align with National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) standards, embed key Ohio educational initiatives, and include an internship. The program format is a cohort model that meets on Saturdays. New cohorts begin each summer (applications due April 15) or fall (applications due July 30) at the Athens and various regional campuses.

Opportunities for Graduates  

The program is committed to preparing students to be agents of change in education and related fields such as government agencies, foundations, and private non-profit organizations. Program graduates typically assume positions as leaders of learning organizations, school principals, school superintendents, and other PK-12 educational leaders, or they may continue to serve as teachers in P-12 settings. In addition, graduates who work in the public or private sector fill other leadership and/or administrative roles in those organizations. Other graduates enter doctoral programs in leadership and related fields.

Admission Requirements

1. Online application: Degree program code ME5028 (Athens) or ME5029 (Regional) 

2. Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended for bachelor’s and master’s education with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 scale (unless from Ohio University).    

3. Three letters of professional recommendation that describe the academic skills and professional potential of the applicant. 

4. Statement of purpose (2-4 pages, double-spaced) to assess the applicant’s writing skills, career commitment, leadership potential, and professional goals. 

5. Current résumé/CV is preferred but not required

International Students

This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program. International students seeking an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership must apply to the Athens-based cohort, ME5028. 

Graduation Requirements

Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours. Note that due to the cohort nature of the program courses must be taken in sequence and that all courses are not offered every semester.
