Certificate Overview

The College of Health Sciences and Professions and the College of Education jointly sponsor a graduate certificate program designed to provide graduate students in speech-language pathology and teacher education with foundational knowledge in child language and literacy. The knowledge gained from this certificate should better prepare future professionals in education and speech-language pathology to support children’s language and literacy skills in the school setting.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

1. Students will be able to explain how SLPs, reading specialists, and classroom teachers work collaboratively to optimize children’s literacy development.
2. Students will be able to explain the speech language pathologists’ and teachers’ roles with children with dyslexia and how the disorder impacts literacy learning.
3. Students will be able to analyze a variety of curriculum and written materials in various content areas for language demands.
4. Students will be able to describe the structure of language on different levels and from various perspectives.

Opportunities upon Completion

The Certificate in Child Language and Literacy is designed to provide students in the graduate speech-language pathology degree program (MA-SLP) with foundational knowledge in relation to content area literacy instruction, literacy practices and strategies, phonics, and the structure of language. The Certificate is also designed to provide students in the teacher education program with foundational knowledge about children with speech and language impairments, the language demands in the curriculum/academic standards, and an overview of language assessment and intervention. Given the importance of children’s literacy development, the knowledge gained from this certificate should better prepare SLP graduate student to contribute to the literacy development of children who have speech and language impairments. The Certificate should also benefit graduate students in teacher education who will potentially be working alongside SLPs to provide education for children who have speech and language impairments.

Admission Requirements

This certificate is available to any student enrolled in the graduate program in speech-language pathology or a graduate program in teacher education. 

International Students

This certificate program alone does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this certificate. However, this certificate can be completed during any Ohio University speech-language pathology or teacher education graduate program, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to that degree program.
