OCOM 8200 - Elective - Anesthesiology This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on an anesthesiology service. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in preoperative evaluation and perioperative management of surgical patients. Course topics are reinforced through hands-on clinical experiences.
Credit Hours: 2-40
Course Outcomes
- Students will be able to define the components of the preoperative evaluation of a patient.
- Students will be able to define the ASA physical status classification system.
- Students will be able to perform a preoperative history and physical exam on an anesthesia patient.
- Students will be able to outline the requirements of informed consent.
- Students will be able to describe the alterations in physiology due to anesthesia.
- Students will be able to describe the pharmacokinetics and side effects of common anesthetics.
- Students will be able to describe basic airway and ventilator management.
