OCOM 8201 - Elective - Aerospace Medicine


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on an aerospace medicine rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation and management of health issues related to aviation, spaceflight, and extreme environments.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to explain physiological changes associated with aviation and spaceflight.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of aerospace medicine to evaluate fitness for duty in pilots and astronauts.
  • Students will be able to describe environmental stressors and their impact on human health in aerospace settings.
  • Students will be able to manage common medical conditions encountered in aviation and spaceflight.
  • Students will be able to interpret diagnostic data relevant to aerospace medicine (e.g., barometric effects, radiation exposure).
  • Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to promote safety and health in aerospace environments.
  • Students will be able to communicate effectively with aviation personnel regarding health risks and preventive strategies.
  • Students will be able to reflect on ethical and operational considerations in aerospace medical practice.
