OCOM 8204 - Elective - Cardiovascular, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a cardiovascular and thoracic surgery rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation, surgical management, and postoperative care of patients with cardiac, pulmonary, esophageal, and mediastinal conditions.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to describe cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, pathology, and surgical principles.
  • Students will be able to apply clinical reasoning to the evaluation and management of cardiac and thoracic conditions.
  • Students will be able to describe standard surgical procedures, including coronary bypass, valve repair, and lung resection.
  • Students will be able to recognize indications for surgical intervention in cardiac, pulmonary, and esophageal disease.
  • Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive cardiothoracic care.
  • Students will be able to reflect on the impact of cardiothoracic disease and surgery on patient outcomes and quality of life.
