OCOM 8209 - Elective - General Surgery This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a general surgery rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of surgical patients.
Credit Hours: 2-40
Course Outcomes
- Students will be able to conduct a focused history and physical exam pertinent to a presenting complaint.
- Students will be able to identify and describe common general surgical conditions.
- Students will be able to assist in basic surgical procedures using aseptic technique.
- Students will be able to interpret imaging and labs relevant to surgical decision-making.
- Students will be able to manage preoperative and postoperative care.
- Student will be able to assess a patient to ascertain common surgical emergencies.
- Students will be able to communicate care plans to medical colleagues, patients and their families using compassion, empathy, and respect.
