OCOM 8212 - Elective - Neonatology


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a neonatology rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation and management of newborns with acute and chronic medical conditions in neonatal intensive care and nursery settings.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to describe the physiologic differences between neonates and older pediatric patients.
  • Students will be able to identify common neonatal conditions and their clinical presentations.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of neonatal resuscitation and stabilization.
  • Students will be able to interpret diagnostic tests relevant to neonatal care.
  • Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in the management of neonatal patients.
  • Students will be able to recognize and manage complications in premature and low birth weight infants.
  • Students will be able to explain the role of nutrition and developmental support in neonatal outcomes.
  • Students will be able to reflect on ethical considerations in neonatal intensive care.
