OCOM 8213 - Elective - Nephrology This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a nephrology rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation and management of acute and chronic kidney diseases across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Credit Hours: 2-40
Course Outcomes
- Students will be able to explain renal physiology and pathology relevant to clinical practice.
- Students will be able to apply principles of diagnosis and management for acute and chronic kidney conditions.
- Students will be able to describe standard nephrological procedures, including dialysis and urinalysis.
- Students will be able to recognize and manage electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.
- Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive nephrology care.
- Students will be able to reflect on the impact of kidney disease on patients’ quality of life and health systems.
