OCOM 8216 - Elective - Obstetrics and Gynecology


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on an obstetrics and gynecology rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the care of patients across the spectrum of obstetric and gynecologic conditions, including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and reproductive health.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to perform a focused obstetric and gynecologic history and physical exam.
  • Students will be able to identify and manage common OB/GYN conditions.
  • Students will be able to assist in management of a typical patient on the labor and delivery unit.
  • Students will be able to assist in common gynecologic procedures and surgeries.
  • Students will be able to interpret prenatal tests and fetal monitoring data.
  • Students will be able to apply a team-based approach to medical decision-making.
  • Students will be able to communicate care plans to medical colleagues, patients and their families using compassion, empathy, and respect.
