OCOM 8220 - Elective - Orofacial Plastic Surgery


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on an orofacial plastic surgery rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation, surgical management, and postoperative care of patients with congenital, traumatic, and aesthetic conditions affecting the face, jaw, and oral cavity.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to apply orofacial anatomy and reconstructive principles to the evaluation of patients presenting with orofacial conditions.
  • Students will be able to apply clinical reasoning to the management of orofacial conditions.
  • Students will be able to describe common surgical procedures in orofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  • Students will be able to identify indications for aesthetic and functional interventions in the orofacial region.
  • Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive orofacial surgical care.
  • Students will be able to interpret diagnostic imaging relevant to orofacial surgery planning.
  • Students will be able to explain postoperative care and potential complications in orofacial procedures.
  • Students will be able to reflect on ethical considerations and patient-centered communication in orofacial plastic surgery.
