OCOM 8225 - Elective - Colorectal Surgery This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a colon and rectal surgery rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation, surgical management, and postoperative care of patients with colorectal conditions.
Credit Hours: 2-40
Course Outcomes
- Students will be able to explain colorectal anatomy and pathology relevant to surgical care.
- Students will be able to apply principles of surgical evaluation and management for colorectal conditions.
- Students will be able to be able to describe standard procedures, including minimally invasive and robotic techniques.
- Students will be able to be able to recognize and manage postoperative complications and learn to care for ostomies.
- Students will be able to be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive colorectal care.
- Students will be able to be able to reflect on the impact of colorectal disease and surgery on patient quality of life.
