OCOM 8228 - Elective - Radiology


The elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment experience. Educational activities rely on the application and integration of foundational concepts in radiology through faculty and learner-directed study. Additionally, course topics are reinforced through clinical experiences. In this course, students gain experience in the fundamentals of radiology including foundational knowledge of imaging modalities, clinical indications, basic interpretation, and methods of integration into clinical care.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to define the terms used to describe the radiologic findings of basic imaging modalities (X-ray, CT, MRI, and US).
  • Students will be able to distinguish between tissue types identified in basic imaging modalities.
  • Students will be able to identify the major anatomic structures seen in basic imaging modalities.
  • Students will be able to recognize the pertinent clinical history required when ordering common imaging modalities.
  • Students will be able to outline the most common imaging studies including risks/benefits, indications/contraindications, and limitations.
  • Students will be able to select the most appropriate study for the evaluation of common clinical presentations.
  • Students will be able to develop basic interpretive skills and recognize the most frequent imaging findings of common clinical conditions.
