OCOM 8243 - Elective - Sports Medicine


This elective integrates biomedical, social, osteopathic, clinical, and health systems science into the clinical learning environment. Students apply foundational concepts through faculty- and learner-directed study, reinforced by clinical experiences while on a sports medicine rotation. Students collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to gain experience in the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and medical conditions related to physical activity.

Credit Hours: 2-40

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to describe common sports-related injuries and their management.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment in active populations.
  • Students will be able to describe rehabilitation strategies and procedural interventions in sports medicine.
  • Students will be able to recognize the role of exercise, nutrition, and prevention in athletic health.
  • Students will be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support the care and recovery of athletes.
  • Students will be able to reflect on ethical considerations and communication in sports medicine settings.
