OCOM 6052 - Osteopathic Narrative Medicine Elective 3: The Open Book Project


The third course in the elective series builds upon the skills introduced in Narrative Medicine 1 and Narrative Medicine 2, complex social issues in healthcare. The course requires students to apply and demonstrate narrative competencies and develop group leadership skills. Students are required to develop and facilitate sessions that apply the principles of narrative medicine. Drawing upon and augmenting content in the Chronic Illness course, students apply narrative competencies to social and clinical aspects of medicine. Students will participate in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).

Course Outcomes
  • Students will be able to create narrative activities that facilitate critical reflection on osteopathic medical practice.
  • Students will be able to lead narrative medicine activities, including close reading, radical listening, and reflective writing.
  • Students will be able to consider ideologies and worldviews using a narrative approach.
  • Students will be able to apply a narrative framework to complex issues of social and interpersonal issues in healthcare.
  • Students will be able to evaluate narrative approaches to enhancing personal, professional, and clinical relationships.
  • Students will be able to facilitate reflective practice in others for the purpose of increasing perspective-taking and self-awareness.
