OCOM 869G - Osteopathic Clinical Rotation Orientation


All OU-COM students begin their third year of medical training with an osteopathic clinical rotation orientation. This course is a cumulative experience that brings together 18 months of medical educational experiences in an interactive environment in preparation for beginning clinical rotations at the CORE sites. At the conclusion of the summer session, students will be able to:

  • perform and document a full history and physical exam
  • interpret a variety of radiographic studies
  • present clinical patients/cases to faculty and peers
  • perform the following procedures:

intravenous cannulation, peripheral and central; nasogastric tube placement; Foley catheter placement; endotracheal intubation; CPR; defibrillation; suturing; skin biopsy; scrubbing; gowning; gloving and splinting

  • provide appropriate documentation through the completion of a variety of medical records, including:

admit notes; admit orders; discharge summary; surgical notes; labor and delivery notes; and prescriptions

  • interpret diagnostic testing in the context of clinical cases
  • apply pharmacologic therapy in the context of a clinical case
  • be able to integrate OMM diagnosis and techniques clinical practice at their CORE training sites
  • perform and document a variety of focused osteopathic structural examinations, followed by appropriate osteopathic manipulative treatment
  • be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
