CHE 5800 - Biochemical Engineering


Studies of processes in chemical engineering that depend on biological systems. Overview of biological basics, enzyme kinetics, major metabolic pathways, cell growth characteristics, essentials of recombinant DNA technology, bioreactor design and control, and basics in bioseparation methods. One lab project is included.

Learning Outcomes:
  • The student will be able to calculate ATP production in glycolysis and Krebs cycle.
  • The student will be able to calculate enzyme kinetics problems with and without inhibitors.
  • The student will be able to calculate stoichiometry problems for cell growth.
  • The student will be able to explain how a foreign gene is introduced to a microbial host to produce a recombinant protein.
  • The student will be able to explain how microbes reproduce.
  • The student will be able to explain information flow in genetics using the central dogma of molecular biology.
  • The student will be able to explain the diversity of life and its impact on biochemical engineering.
  • The student will be able to explain the four basic stages in a downstream bioseparation process.
  • The student will be able to plot a typical bacterial growth curve and calculate specific growth rate.
  • The student will be able to select a suitable sterilization method for a particular item or liquid solution.
  • The student will be able to solve simple batch and chemostat problems.
  • The student will be able to specify a multi-stage bioseparation process for a chemical in a raw broth or solution.
  • The student will be able to write a technical report for a lab project.
