EDCE 6750 - Psychopathology for Counselors


Covers the major categories of disorders as delineated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR). The primary focus will be on a clinical overview, etiology, and treatment options from the perspective of biological, psychosocial, and sociocultural influences. Considered to be a primer to Diagnosis and Treatment Planning.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate competence in critically reviewing research, theoretical literature and other media as it pertains to mental and emotional disorders.[CMHC (E.3)]
  • Explore legal and ethical issues relevant to the classification and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. [CMHC (B.1)]
  • Identify and demonstrate understanding of mental and emotional disorders- prevalence, onset etiology, and treatment options. [CMHC(C.2)]
  • Understand cultural factors affecting the classification, assessment and treatment of various mental and emotional disorders from the perspective of individual, group and universal perspectives [CMHC (H.1)]
