EDCE 8220 - Career Development and Counseling The purpose is to provide students with an understanding of the basic concepts, theories, and techniques of career counseling. Will examine various theories of career development, career choice processes, career counseling interventions, the use of assessment in career counseling, occupational and labor market information, the application of career counseling theories and techniques for diverse populations, principles of vocational rehabilitation, the relationship of career development and mental health, career guidance programs in educational settings, and other related topics. Lectures may be enhanced by guest speakers and other class activities.

- Become familiar with career development program planning, organization, implementation, administration, and evaluation. (CACREP, II, K, 4, c)
- Become familiar with various types of tests and assessments used in career planning and decision making. (CACREP, II, K, 4, f)
- Develop a perspective and appreciation for the historical, philosophical, theoretical, and professional foundations of career counseling and vocational development.
- Develop an appreciation for the influence of diversity and multiculturalism in the career development, assessment, and counseling processes by discussing influences of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability. (CACREP, II, K, 4, d)
- Gain awareness and understanding of career, educational, occupational and labor market information resources. (CACREP, II, K, 4, b & g)
- Learn about career counseling processes, techniques, and resources, including those applicable to specific populations. (CACREP, II, K, 4, e & h)
- Learn about major career development theories and decision-making models, as well as career interventions relevant to career choice and career development over the life span. (CACREP, II, K 4, a)
- Understand the close relationship between career functioning and mental health status by examining issues related to occupational stress, and other conditions that interact with vocational behavior. (CACREP, II, K, 4, d)
