HIST 5410 - History of Africa to 1850 Provides an introductory overview of the peoples and states of Africa, and their developments over time. Focusing primarily on the sub-Saharan regions, will explore a variety of sources that historians of Africa use to examine issues such as state formation, trade and commerce, gender and society, and slavery.

Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to discuss major historical themes and time periods in African history, and basic, general trends in African historiography.
- Students will be able to identify, assess, and evaluate critically a variety of primary sources pertaining to African history, interpretations of such sources, and broader historical interpretations based on these sources.
- Students will be familiar with geographical, historical, and contemporary features of maps of Africa.
- Students will develop increased knowledge of different African cultural groups and their historical developments during the 19th and 20th centuries.
