ISE 5340 - Work Design


Design of work systems and measurement of work. Topics include job methods, operation analysis, charting techniques, stop-watch time study, work sampling, predetermined time systems, standard data, incentive wage systems, and learning curves. Students are also introduced to ergonomics considerations in the design of manual operations.

  • Apply a predetermined time system to determine a standard time.
  • Balance operations to form efficient workstations.
  • Calculate the learning curve for a task.
  • Design a manual workstation.
  • Design an efficient sequence of operations.
  • Design and perform a time study.
  • Design and perform a work sampling study.
  • Determine appropriate work allowances.
  • Develop and interpret appropriate charts for analysis of operations and processes.
  • Develop time standards from the results of a time study.
  • Identify basic ergonomic concerns in designing a manual work area.
