PHYS 5041 - Mathematical Methods in Physics 1

Mathematical methods, such as multivariate calculus, differential equations, series, complex analysis, and Fourier analysis, will be discussed and applied to a variety of physics problems. The emphasis is on problem solving using these techniques, and on their unity across the discipline of physics.

Requisites:
Credit Hours: 5
Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture, 1.0 discussion
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • After taking this course, students should:
  • Be able to compute Fourier series and Fourier transforms and understand their basic properties, including their connection with derivatives, convolutions and Delta functions.
  • Be able to determine if a numeric series is convergent, to find Taylor expansions of functions; and to combine and manipulate power series.
  • Be able to identify singularities of complex functions. Be able to compute residues and use them to calculate integrals.
  • Be able to solve linear ordinary differential equations (DEs), both general first order DEs and also second order DEs with constant coefficients. Be able to solve linear DEs by using power series.
  • Be proficient in the use of partial derivatives and vector differential operators. and be able to apply Green’s theorem, Gauss’ Divergence Theorem and Stokes’ Theorem in Physics problems. .
  • Have a practical command of the most common mathematical techniques that are used in solving Physics problems.
