EDEL 5150 - Teaching Reading and Language Arts to Fourth and Fifth Graders


Prepares students to teach reading and all areas of language arts included in the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Grades 4 and 5, based on a sound understanding of child development and literacy learning processes. This course also fulfills partial requirements for candidacy for the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement through the Ohio Department of Education.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Successful students will be able to select and use formative assessment practices in their instructional routines, seamlessly, and to use the information gained from assessments to adjust instruction to support students’ learning needs.
  • Successful students will be able to demonstrate, in their classroom, school and community settings, appreciation of all the language arts as valued communication processes.
  • Successful students will be able to manage and monitor a classroom learning environment that supports independent, collaborative and whole-class engagement in language and literacy learning activities.
  • Successful students will be able to model standard English for their students while also respecting students’ own oral language traditions.
  • Successful students will be able to teach reading by using instructional strategies and protocols that support students in the selection, comprehension, and appreciation of good literature.
  • Successful students will be able to teach writing skills in ways that emphasize writing as a process of thinking, acting, and communicating.
