EDCE 6920 - Counseling Practicum


The counseling practicum provides a closely supervised field experience in counseling and related activities. Students spend approximately 10 hours per week at their practicum sites and attend class weekly. Students assist clients through counseling and related services in educational or clinical settings. The practicum focuses on counseling and consultation processes to further develop interpersonal relationships, communication skills, methods planning, service provision, and techniques to facilitate change of behaviors and attitudes.

Requisites: EDCE 6200 and 6550
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 6.0 hours.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 6.0 practicum
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will develop and improve basic skills in counseling and consultation.
  • Students will integrate theory, practice, and ethical standards of counseling with their own personal style.
  • Students will develop case conceptualization skills and be able to apply their theoretical orientation to understand clients’ unique circumstances to create appropriate treatment plans.
  • Students will effectively provide counseling and case management services under supervision.
