REC 1010 - Wilderness Navigation


Introduces students to basic knowledge and techniques used in land navigation. Students gain hands-on experience as they learn knowledge and skills that address map folding, map interpretation, parts of a compass, declination, route finding, and triangulation. The knowledge and skills practiced in this course prepares students to safely navigate during future outdoor and backcountry excursions.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be to identify parts of the compass commonly used in wilderness navigation.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate how to properly orient a map and account for declination.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate how to properly fold a map for easy identification while traveling in a backcountry setting.
  • Students will be able to connect relevant experience and academic knowledge as they apply principles of wilderness navigation in triangulating their position in a backcountry setting.
  • Students will be able to interpret map features on a topographic map.
  • Students will be able to practice hazard awareness and risk prevention as part of land navigation.
  • Students will be able to make connections across disciplines as they evaluate key environmental considerations to minimize the impacts of wilderness navigation and travel can have on the natural world.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences designed to apply wilderness navigation skills in a field setting.
  • Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
