THAR 2810 - History and Literature of Musical Theater


This is a survey of the history of the development of musical theater, from the origins of musical Greek Drama, opera, operetta, indigenous American musical and theatrical forms, to the present. Emphasis is placed on 19th and 20th Century American Musical Theater and the resultant repertoire.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify the creators, concepts and historical events that contributed to the development of musical theater history, as well as the resultant repertoire.
  • Students will be able to recognize and analyze the musical theater works considered significant to the development of the art form.
  • Students will be able to identify and interpret the various forms and styles of musical theater.
  • Students will be able to name and discuss the key players (creators, creative staff and performers) who have made significant contributions to the evolution and development of musical theater.
  • Students will be able to characterize and distinguish best performance practices (via audiovisual documentation) as it relates to the different periods and styles of musical theater repertoire.
