CARS 2040 - Archaeology of Ancient Egypt


The course introduces students to the main archaeological sites, methods and types of material specific to each period and region of Egypt. We investigate the components of Egyptian civilization in each period from the first settlements in the 10th millennium to the period of foreign domination in the 1st millennium, in terms of conservation of social and religious hierarchy and innovation in adapting and transforming new ideas.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and put in context the terminology, sites and types of artifacts characteristic of the different periods of study.
  • Students will be able to interpret scholarly archaeological writing relevant to the different periods, regions and subdisciplines belonging to Egyptian culture.
  • Students will be able to apply their knowledge about Egyptian archaeology and material culture to new or unfamiliar objects and sites.
  • Students will be able to evaluate critically archaeological theories about the development of different cultural institutions in Egyptian society.
  • Students will be able to analyze how Egyptian monuments and material culture have been acquired to support cultural agendas of other ancient and modern cultures.
  • Students will be able to explain how the unique environment of Egypt shaped Egyptian civilization.
