SOC 2020 - Exploring Professions and Careers in Sociology
This course helps students explore career paths in a broad array of fields relating to sociology, sociology-criminology, and sociology-prelaw. Sociological training prepares students for a wide variety of career options, and many organizations–corporate, non-profit, and public–rely on social science research methods to assess goals and operations, solve workplace problems, improve information-gathering processes, design and implement policy, locate and apply for grants, and to increase market share. Sociology majors are well equipped to evaluate problems holistically, analyze the risk and benefits associated with decision-making, and implement changes that improve systemic outcomes. In SOC 2020, students assess their skills, explore professional interests, forge network contacts, learn about grants and grant writing, and learn how to document and communicate their sociological training and expertise in ways that employers find valuable. Students also learn about opportunities for advanced study in graduate programs or law schools, and explore and practice skills needed for successful application to these programs.

- Students will be able to describe the world of grants and the grant proposal process.
- Students will be able to discuss typical requirements of graduate schools and law schools and stages of the application process.
- Students will be able to sharpen communication skills with mock interview and career coaching sessions.
- Students will be able to effectively communicate the value of their sociological training to potential employers.
