Program Overview
Ohio University-Lancaster offers a two-year program leading to an Associate in Applied Science with a major in engineering technology. The program has been developed in response to the great demand expressed by manufacturers for skilled technicians and engineering technologists. Three tracks of the program prepare the graduate for work as an electro-mechanical technician or a mechanical maintenance technician, or allows students to prepare for continued studies in a bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology.
Electro-mechanical technicians work in the areas of automated equipment used in manufacturing and assembly plants. Students in this track of the program may apply 46 credit hours of their associate degree toward a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology and Management offered in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, in Athens. This structure facilitates a graduate obtaining an entry-level position and gaining experience before continuing his/her education toward a baccalaureate degree.
Those pursuing the mechanical maintenance track can be employed in a variety of work ranging from manufacturing to facility maintenance. It is intended to train for career fields involving electrical work, machine repair, or general maintenance. Students may direct the program to a specific career opportunity through independent study and externship courses.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
The diverse format of this associate in applied science degree provides the student with a wide variety of career opportunities. A student may choose from one of three tracks. The mechanical track prepares the student for a career as a machine repair technician or a plant mechanical technician. The electro-mechanical track prepares the student as an electrician or an electronics technician for programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and electric motors and controls. The engineering track provides students with the opportunity to pursue any of the engineering baccalaureate programs offered by the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. A 2+2 relationship exists with some of these majors and can lead to a bachelor’s degree with two additional years of college. Students should discuss with their advisors the career pathway that best suits their individual interests.
