Program Overview

The BS1221 nursing major code is designed for individuals who are preparing to sit for the registered nurse (RN) licensing exam. Individuals will apply to the preBSN major (ND1220), complete specified college courses, and apply to be admitted to the BS1221 major. Admission to BS1221 is selective and determined by completion of a specified set of courses, a minimum grade point average of 2.75, successful score on the Health Education Systems Inc.-A2 (HESI A2) exam, an interview, a physical exam, a background check, and updated immunizations.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Freshman are not directly admitted to BS1221. Freshman apply to ND1220 (preBSN major). Requirements are: high school graduation with 3.00 GPA on 4.00 scale; completion of the following high school courses with grade of C (2.0) or better in English (4 units), college-prep math (3 units), social sciences (2 units), biology/chemistry (2 units); minimum composite ACT score of 23 or SAT of 1020 on math and critical reading sections, and completion of the admission process at Ohio University.

Change of Program Policy

Individuals seeking to change their major to BS1221 need to contact the School of Nursing, schedule an advising appointment, and complete the required paperwork.

External Transfer Admission

Transfer students are admitted to the preBSN major code (ND1220) rather than directly into the BS1221. Requirements are: overall minimum college GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale; official copies of high school transcripts if fewer than 45 credits of college work were completed, and completion of the Ohio University admission process. Following admission to Ohio University in the ND1220 preBSN code these students follow the same path as individuals admitted as freshman.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduates will be eligible to sit for the registered nursing licensing exam (NCLEX-RN). Upon successful passing of the NCLEX-RN graduates can be employed in entry-level registered nursing positions in hospitals, home health care, clinics, and other health care roles. Graduates are prepared to enter master’s or doctoral programs in nursing which prepare baccalaureate registered nurses to become nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, midwives, clinical nurse specialists, educators, and/or administrators.
