Program Overview

The HTC program in Women’s and Gender Studies provides an opportunity to explore the phenomenon of gender and its intersection with race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and other elements of diversity. It is the first interdisciplinary HTC program, and as such complements the already rich variety of course offerings across many fields. Students have the opportunity of working in tutorial format with instructors from different disciplines.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

In accordance with Honors Tutorial College practices, admission to the program will be made on the basis of competitive applications from top-ranked high school seniors. Candidates should have minimum standardized test scores of 30 on the ACT and/or 1300 on the SAT, and should ideally be in the top 10% of their high school graduating classes. Students are selected by the director of studies of the Women’s and Gender Studies program and the Honors Tutorial College on the basis of superior ability and sustained motivation. An interview with the director of studies is required for acceptance into the program.

Change of Program Policy

The program will consider applications from exceptionally promising first-year students already enrolled at Ohio University. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering freshmen.

External Transfer Admission

The program will consider transfer applications from exceptionally promising first-year students at another institution. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering first-year students.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

A B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies prepares students in critical thinking and effective communication, and can be applied to a variety of careers. A high percentage of Women’s and Gender Studies graduates go on to graduate school immediately following graduation. They typically pursue careers in academia, law, nonprofit organizations, or advocacy work. As graduates of the Honors Tutorial College, they are in high demand.

Requirements

HTC Grade Requirements

Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher overall and in the program of studies.

University English Composition Requirement

Complete one First-Year Composition course (1E) and one Junior Composition course (1J).

HTC Seminar

Complete the following course:

HC 2500 - Honors Seminar Credit Hours: 3.0

Women’s and Gender Studies Core

Complete the following courses:

WGS 3500 - Feminist Theory Credit Hours: 3.0
WGS 4800 - Capstone in Women’s and Gender Studies Credit Hours: 3.0

Nonthesis Tutorials

Students will take at least five nonthesis tutorials prior to their senior years. At least one of these tutorials will be in sexuality studies, and at least one will be in global studies.

Thesis Tutorials

Two senior-level tutorials are specifically designated “research tutorials” in which a student enrolls for the purpose of researching and writing the required senior thesis. This thesis is written under the supervision of a member of the Women’s and Gender Studies faculty or faculty approved by the director of study and the dean of HTC.
