Program Overview

The certificate brings together interdisciplinary coursework from anthropology, criminology, history, interdisciplinary arts, political science, social work, sociology, and other departments across the social sciences and humanities relating to law’s formative and constitutive role in cultural, political, and social life. The certificate will be supported by the university’s Center for Law, Justice, & Culture, which provides an academic community dedicated to teaching and scholarship by integrating programs and uniting faculty and students who share a common interest in the critical analysis and interpretation of law.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students with an overall GPA of 3.4 or above will be eligible for 25 slots per year.

Change of Program Policy

Students will submit an application through the CLJC website. Required materials include student DARS and a one-page essay in which the student lists his or her course of study, explaining the reasons for the choice and interests in law, justice, and culture. Optional materials include an essay for students who have not met the minimum GPA requirement, giving them an opportunity to explain their qualifications for and interest in the certificate.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

The certificate program in Law, Justice, & Culture promotes interdisciplinary education through a coherent program of study that will enable undergraduate students to study law and justice from a liberal arts perspective. Law, Justice, and Culture Electives


Take nine credits from the following list of courses that address law’s formative and constitutive role in cultural, political, and social life. In order to ensure that students receive interdisciplinary training in law, justice, and culture, the certificate requires that the three advanced courses must be distributed across two different departments, with at least one course outside the student’s primary major.
