Program Overview

The interdisciplinary nature of the global studies–Africa major is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of Africa applicable for a wide variety of professions. Majors are required to study at least one African language and study abroad or intern in Africa. Students must consult with their advisor and the Education Abroad Office before comitting to an internship or study abroad program.

Complete 45 hours, including the following courses:

Complete 12 hours from the following courses (GLC courses for GLC students only):

African Studies Courses


Complete 12 hours from the following courses. Courses must be from three different departments.

African Language Courses


Complete 6 hours from one of the following “African” languages listed below. In combination with your B.A. language requirement, complete a total of 3 years in one African language or 2 years of one African language and 1 year of another African language or equivalent.

Education Abroad/Internship


Complete one advisor-approved education abroad or internship experience which complements area and language of study; and is at least 5 weeks in duration.
