Athletic Administration - MAA

Delivery Mode:  The MAA program is delivered through online modules and virtual classes.  Student attendance is required at a weekend long, Athletic Leadership Forum on the Ohio University Athens campus during one summer term.

Program Mission:  The mission of the MAA program is to prepare athletic professionals for leadership roles in interscholastic sports.

Program Learning Objectives:  At the conclusion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Apply effective leadership and critical decision making skills to successfully manage issues and challenges facing sport managers.
  • Recognize and address moral and ethical challenges within the sport industry.
  • Demonstrate effective sales and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate a variety of research methods to address managerial issues in the sport industry.
  • Discuss the legal implications and risk management needs as applied to the sport industry.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use sport management theory as a base for professional practice.
  • Strategically plan for sport facility and event management.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to effectively manage sport within a diverse, global society.

Program Overview:  The MAA online degree program is specifically designed for interscholastic athletic professionals, and individuals who have athletic administration, coaching, or related experience, who aspire to be leaders of first-class athletic programs and who strive to make a difference in the lives of young people.

The program offers a convenient learning experience for interscholastic athletic professionals seeking to further their careers through practical knowledge and competencies. It is designed to provide students advanced opportunities working through realistic challenges and integrating learning experiences into their professional experience.

The MAA program is a lock-step, cohort-based program offered in an online format. It requires students to attend an Athletic Leadership Forum on the Ohio University Athens campus for 2.5 days during one summer term. The remainder of the instruction is provided online. The program can be completed in two years.

Graduation Requirements:  The MAA is a 36 credit hour, lock-step program.  Students will take the following courses in six semesters.

  • SASM 6040 - Administration of Interscholastic Athletic Programs
  • SASM 6100 - Athletic Administration Seminar
  • SASM 6260 - Sport Governance and Policy Development
  • SASM 6420 - Ethics in Sport
  • SASM 6480 - Public Assembly Facility and Event Management
  • SASM 6550 - Sports and Sports Consumers
  • SASM 6670 - Human Resource Management in Sport Organizations
  • SASM 6700 - Financial Management for Sport and Recreation Programs and Facilities
  • SASM 6280 – Legal Foundations of Risk Management in Athletics 
  • SASM 6800 - Research Methods in Sports Administration
  • SASM 6990 – Capstone Seminar in Sports Administration

Culminating Experience: A brief description of the capstone or culminating experience, including options.  Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Capstone Seminar- Designed to examine current trends and issues in the study of sports administration.  The field of sports administration is in a dynamic state.  New theories, practices, and processes are constantly being developed.  Perspectives on these trends and issues will be analyzed by drawing on current literature and research.  Students will focus on performance of the firm as an outcome of strategy in a competitive environment.  The objective of this course is to synthesize knowledge gained through experience and previous graduate coursework, and develop advanced understanding of the firm’s behavior in a competitive environment.

Admissions Requirements: 

  • Regionally accredited bachelor’s degree.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in interscholastic athletic administration, coaching or related experience.
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from an immediate supervisor, one of which must come from a current or former interscholastic administrator, and one of which must come from an individual who can speak to the candidate’s ability to handle graduate-level coursework.
  • Official transcripts from all degree bearing institutions at the bachelor’s level or higher and unofficial transcript for any additional college coursework.
  • A professional plan statement discussing your career goals, how the master’s degree will help you achieve those goals, areas or competencies that you expect the program will help you strengthen and what you plan to contribute to the learning community.
  • Current resume.
